Never Forget…

10 years ago, I was arriving home from my little boring job at the library, only to answer the phone to a friend’s hysterical screams: “Turn your TV on, the Twins are on fire!!!”

For the next 10 hours, time froze. I was sitting in my chair shocked, speechless, tears running down my face, as the second plane hit the South Tower. I had so many friends in Manhattan… How could I know if they were fine?! Phones were oblivious, I think the whole planet was trying to call someone in New York. America was under attack! The land where I had always dreamed of living, where I wanted to go to school, where I saw myself growing old – it was being brought to its knees by evil masterminds plotting the worst terror attack in the history of humanity! The amount of devastation was brutal to watch…

It was September 11, 2001. Romania was my home. Sibiu, to be more specific, where I had a tiny-after-graduation job as a librarian at the Center for American Studies within “Lucian Blaga” University – my Alma Mater. The irony…

I loved that little history-filled city and sadly I was going to leave it, years from then, to pursue my goals of working in broadcast journalism. This one falls in the “be-careful-what-you-wish-for-cause-it-might-happen” category…

Feast your eyes below on some shots I took while visiting last August. From the mighty mountains bathed in fog, to the newly rehabilitated historic center and the whimsical ASTRA Museum Craft Festival, feel free to ooohh and aaahh at the the talent of the Romanian folk artists and the little wonders they make…

I had never stopped believing though, in the years to come, that one day I will get to see the United States, even only for a visit. Rebuilt, growing bigger and better and stronger.

And on a sunny day in April 2006 it happened that I somehow landed on this crazy hot, humid and gorgeous Alabama coast. I was born and raised in the mountains, trained my body to endure the coldest winters, and here I was, ankle deep in white squeaky powdery sand and a whole lotta crystal clear water! I was in love. Forever. And I was HOME!

So this post goes out to the brave, to the fearless and the fallen that we will never forget…

And to old loved places and shiny, squeaky, powdery beginnings!

Happy Sunday!
